Spring and fall are the best times to visit Fredericksburg. April and May bring mild temperatures and flowering dogwoods across the battlefield parks; October offers good foliage and comfortable walking weather. The Civil War parks hold commemorative events in December around the anniversary of the Battle of Fredericksburg (December 11-15, 1862), which draw historians and re-enactors.
Summers are hot and humid — typical Virginia summers — and the National Military Park trails can be uncomfortable in July and August. Winters are mild by northern standards, rarely below freezing, and the museums are open year-round with shorter queues.
