Moore House

The Moore House is where representatives of Washington, Rochambeau, and Cornwallis negotiated the British surrender. The restored house sits away from the village, surrounded by fields and woods that make the military geography easier to picture.

Access can vary, but even the exterior stop is worthwhile. It gives the Yorktown story a human scale: not just armies and cannon, but a small house pressed into service at the end of a siege.

A story
The surrender terms were hammered out here because the house sat between the opposing lines. The Moore family itself had fled the fighting, leaving their home to become a diplomatic room for an event that changed the war.
