Yorktown Victory Monument

The Yorktown Victory Monument rises above the village near the river, commemorating the American and French victory of 1781. Its tall granite column is one of the most visible landmarks in town.

The monument is an easy walk from Main Street and Riverwalk Landing. Come near the end of the day for soft light over the river and a good sense of how Yorktown commands the bluff.

A story
Congress authorized a Yorktown monument just days after the surrender, but the column was not completed until 1884. The delay says a great deal about how long the young republic took to turn victory into official memory.
