The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, founded in 1891 and now part of Naval Base Kitsap, takes up much of the south side of Bremerton and is the largest naval shipyard on the West Coast. You cannot get in without an escort — it is a working military installation — but the dry docks and the row of grey hulls dominate the view from the ferry, from the boardwalk, and from any restaurant table on the Bremerton waterfront.
For the rare guided shipyard tour, check the Navy League and PSNS public-affairs website ahead of time; otherwise the Puget Sound Navy Museum on First Street tells the shipyard's story with photos, models and salvaged hardware. The best free view of the dry docks is from the upper deck of the Seattle–Bremerton ferry as it pulls into the terminal.
