Suquamish Museum

A modern, well-curated tribal museum in the small town of Suquamish, on the Port Madison Reservation across from Bainbridge Island. Exhibits cover Coast Salish history, the salmon-and-cedar culture of the Puget Sound peoples, the impact of treaty-era US policy, and the life of Chief Seattle (Si'ahl), who was buried in the cemetery a short walk away. The collection of woven baskets and carved bentwood boxes is particularly strong.

The museum sits next to the House of Awakened Culture longhouse, used for tribal gatherings; a five-minute walk takes you to Chief Seattle's grave, marked with two canoe-shaped concrete arches. Combine with a meal at the Clearwater Resort or a swim at the small beach in Suquamish village.
