Chateau Ste. Michelle

Chateau Ste. Michelle is Washington's flagship winery and the largest producer in the state, set on a 105-acre estate in the Hollywood Hill district of Woodinville. The property is handsome — manicured grounds, a French chateau-style manor, and mature trees — and the tasting room is one of the most polished in the Pacific Northwest.

The winery pours a full range of varietals, from Riesling and Chardonnay to Cabernet Sauvignon and red blends. Guided tours of the production facilities run daily and are worth taking to understand the scale of Washington's wine industry. In summer, Chateau Ste. Michelle hosts an outdoor amphitheater concert series on the estate grounds — artists ranging from jazz to rock play against the backdrop of the vineyards, and you can bring a picnic and wine.

A story
Chateau Ste. Michelle was established in 1934, just after Prohibition ended, making it Washington's oldest winery. The estate buildings were modeled on a French manor and the grounds were designed by the Olmsted Brothers firm, the same landscape architects responsible for Central Park and Seattle's Volunteer Park.
