The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool forms the long axis between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. The view from the Lincoln steps across the water to the monument and the Capitol beyond is one of Washington's defining scenes.
The pool is also part of the National Mall's civil rights history. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech from the Lincoln Memorial steps in 1963, with the crowd filling the space around the water.
