The Smithsonian National Zoo occupies 163 acres of Rock Creek Park in Cleveland Park, about three miles north of the Mall. Admission is free — an arrangement made possible by the Smithsonian's endowment — and the grounds are extensive enough to justify arriving early and spending a full day.
The zoo is best known for its giant pandas, which have been held here since Richard Nixon brought them back from China in 1972. The panda population has fluctuated over the years and current availability should be checked before visiting. Beyond the pandas, the great ape house (orangutans and gorillas) and the elephant enclosure are the most popular exhibits. The hilly terrain means the zoo involves more walking than most — wear comfortable shoes. The surrounding Cleveland Park neighbourhood has good restaurants for lunch or dinner.
