Cass Scenic Railroad is the best non-resort day trip from Snowshoe. The trains climb old logging grades from the former company town of Cass, using the mountain railway story that shaped this part of West Virginia.
The ride is slow in the right way: open mountain views, forest, and the rhythm of steam rather than another highway overlook. Book ahead in peak foliage season.
