Snowshoe

High Allegheny Mountain resort area for skiing, biking, and remote Pocahontas County trips.

Snowshoe is a mountaintop resort area in the Allegheny Mountains of eastern West Virginia. It is not a traditional town, and that matters: come expecting a compact resort village, lift-served slopes, and a remote mountain setting rather than courthouse-square street life.

The place still earns a W66 page because the activities are strong. Snowshoe Mountain Resort is one of the main ski addresses in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic. In summer, the Snowshoe Bike Park keeps the lifts working for downhill riders. Nearby, Cass Scenic Railroad and Green Bank Observatory make the wider Pocahontas County trip much more than a resort stay.

Snowshoe is seasonal and isolated. Bring offline directions, check conditions before driving up the mountain, and remember that mobile coverage in this part of West Virginia can disappear for long stretches.

Getting There

Snowshoe is remote by eastern US standards. You need a car, and you should not rely on live phone navigation once you are deep in Pocahontas County. Download maps before leaving a larger town.

In winter, check road and weather conditions before the final climb. The mountain roads are beautiful, but fog, snow, and ice can make them much slower than the mileage suggests.
