History Museum at the Castle

Housed inside a turreted former Masonic temple dating to 1923, the History Museum at the Castle is the best place to understand both Appleton's past and its most famous son. The main galleries cover Fox Valley history — paper mills, the fur trade, immigrant communities — with well-designed permanent displays and rotating special exhibitions.

The Houdini exhibit occupies a dedicated section and is more substantial than you might expect from a small regional museum. Houdini (born Erik Weisz in Budapest) moved to Appleton as a young child and grew up here before his family relocated to New York. The collection includes handcuffs, restraints, and performance equipment from his actual career, along with documentary material and personal photographs.

A story
Harry Houdini's family moved to Appleton when he was a child, and the boy who would become the world's most famous escape artist grew up playing along these Fox River banks. The museum's permanent Houdini exhibit displays handcuffs, straitjackets, and stage equipment from his actual performances — the lock he picked to escape a Scottish jail is among the collection.
