Kate Blood Gravestone

In Riverside Cemetery on the south side of Appleton stands a single gravestone set apart from the rest — the marker of Kate Blood, who died in 1874 at age 34. Local legend has accumulated around the isolated stone for a century and a half: some say the church refused to bury her among the righteous, others claim the grass around her grave never grows.

The real story is murkier and probably less dramatic, but the isolation of the stone is real, and the legends have a life of their own in the Fox Cities. It is a short detour if you are already visiting the Hearthstone House nearby, and it gives you a sense of how a plain gravestone can accumulate mythology over generations.
