Lake Michigan Surfing

Sheboygan has earned the nickname "Malibu of the Midwest" for its surfing, and unlike most Midwest superlatives, this one is reasonably justified. Lake Michigan's long fetch from the north creates real waves during autumn and winter storms — September through November is prime season, with the best days arriving unpredictably after major weather systems cross the lake.

EOS Surf Shop, near the lakefront, is the centre of the local surf community and provides lessons, rental equipment, and up-to-date conditions reports. The breaks are concentrated along the lakefront south of the harbour pier. Water temperature in the surf season runs cold — a 5mm wetsuit with boots and gloves is standard from October onwards. Watching a session from shore on a grey November morning, with whitecaps running down the lake and surfers in full neoprene padding into the waves, is one of the more unlikely sights the Midwest offers.

A story
Sheboygan has hosted the Fresh Coast Classic surf competition, a national contest on Lake Michigan that draws competitors from across the Great Lakes region. The waves here form from wind-driven fetch across hundreds of miles of open water — technically a different mechanism than ocean swell, but the result in a good November storm is waves that challenge even experienced surfers.
