Tower Hill State Park

Wooded state park containing a reconstructed 1830s lead shot tower.

Tower Hill State Park occupies the wooded bluff above the Wisconsin River where the village of Helena once stood. Its central attraction is the reconstructed Helena Shot Tower: a 120-foot stone-and-wood shaft that was used in the 1830s and 1840s to drop molten lead from a height, the falling droplets forming perfectly round shot as they cooled before splashing into a basin of water at the base.

A short walk leads from the parking area to the tower's mouth, with another path descending steeply to the basin chamber cut into the rock below. The park has picnic spots, hiking trails, a small campground and a swimming hole on the Wisconsin River. Day-use fee or Wisconsin State Park sticker required.
