Spring Green is a small town on the Wisconsin River, about 40 miles west of Madison. It was the home of Frank Lloyd Wright, and his influence is visible everywhere — the State Bank and other small commercial buildings, the family chapel at Unity Chapel, and of course Taliesin, his home and studio, where tours are available throughout the summer.
Just south of town, the House on the Rock is a wonderfully eccentric tourist attraction: a bizarre house built atop a chimney of rock, expanded over decades into a labyrinth of extraordinary collections, automated orchestras and a glass-enclosed walkway jutting out high above the valley. The American Players Theatre, an outdoor amphitheatre in the surrounding woods, stages Shakespeare and other classics every summer. Tower Hill State Park preserves a 19th-century shot tower above the Wisconsin River. Spring Green also hosts a well-regarded juried arts and crafts fair on the last weekend in June.
