Little America is a roadside stop on Interstate 80 in the high desert of southwestern Wyoming, between Green River and Rock Springs. It is not really a town in the conventional sense — the "community" is essentially a large travel plaza with a motel, restaurant, gas station, and gift shop, operated by the Little America hotel chain. The permanent population is the staff.
The name comes from Admiral Richard Byrd's base camp in Antarctica, which the founder of the original Little America stop reportedly thought this stretch of Wyoming resembled. It has been a landmark on the transcontinental road since the 1930s and remains a useful fuel and food stop on one of the lonelier stretches of I-80.
