Day trips

Snowy Range and Medicine Bow–Routt National Forest — 30 minutes east on Highway 130. The alpine terrain above Saratoga is the most accessible day trip: Lake Marie, the Libby Flats overlook, wildflower meadows. Open summer only.

Encampment — 30km south on Highway 230. A tiny frontier town that briefly boomed in the copper era around 1900. The Grand Encampment Museum covers that history with genuine artefacts and original buildings; the surrounding country is good for hiking and wildlife watching.

Rawlins — about 50km north on Highway 130/I-80. The Wyoming Frontier Prison museum here is unusually good — an actual frontier-era penitentiary open for tours. The building itself is as interesting as the history inside it.

Laramie — about 90 minutes via the Snowy Range Road (summer only) or longer via Rawlins year-round. Home to the University of Wyoming, the Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site, and the Laramie Plains Museum. Worth a full day if you are combining it with the Snowy Range drive.
