Most visitors drive their own vehicles through the park. The Grand Loop Road forms a figure-eight that connects all the major attractions, and side roads branch off to trailheads, campgrounds, and viewpoints. Allow more time than you think — distances are large, speed limits are low, and bison on the road can cause long delays.
There is no public transportation within the park. Guided bus tours are available during summer from several park lodges, including a full-day Grand Loop Tour and shorter upper and lower loop options. In winter, snowcoach tours run on most park roads. Contact the park concessionaire for schedules and reservations.
A word of caution: the wildlife is genuinely wild. Stay at least 100 yards from bears and wolves, and at least 25 yards from bison and elk. Every year visitors are injured trying to get close for photographs. You cannot outrun a bison.
