Lamar Valley

The broad open valley in the park's northeast corner is known as America's Serengeti, and the comparison is not entirely unearned. Bison herds of hundreds roam the grasslands alongside pronghorn, elk, coyotes, and grizzly bears. The valley is also one of the best places in the world to see wolves in the wild: the Junction Butte and Lamar Canyon packs are regularly spotted, especially in early morning and late afternoon when they are most active. Bring a spotting scope if you have one — the animals are often visible but distant. Pull-outs along the Lamar Valley road are the best viewing spots; ranger naturalists often set up here with telescopes in summer.
