Shoshone Lake

Shoshone Lake is Yellowstone's second-largest lake, lying southwest of West Thumb at the head of the Lewis River. It has no road access, which keeps it much quieter than Yellowstone Lake and makes it feel like a true backcountry destination.

Reaching the lake requires a hike or a paddle, so it suits visitors with time and outdoor experience rather than a quick loop-road itinerary. The reward is open water, forested shoreline, and a rare sense of space inside one of America's busiest national parks.
