The USVI has a classic Caribbean climate: warm, humid, and sunny most of the year, with temperatures ranging between the low 70s and upper 80s Fahrenheit (22–31°C). Trade winds keep things bearable even in summer. The main variables are rainfall and hurricane risk.
Best time: December to April. The dry season brings the most reliable weather, calm seas, and excellent visibility for snorkeling and diving. February and March are the peak of peak season — expect the highest prices, the most cruise ship traffic in Charlotte Amalie, and the need to book well in advance. If you want good weather without the full crowds, late April or early May can be a sweet spot.
Hurricane season: June to November. Hurricane risk is real, concentrated in August and September. A direct hit can cause serious damage — both Hurricanes Irma and Maria struck in September 2017, causing widespread destruction. If you travel during this period, monitor the National Hurricane Center forecasts and make sure your travel insurance covers cancellations. Outside of actual storms, the weather is often still pleasant, and prices and crowds drop significantly.
Diving and snorkeling. April through August offers the calmest seas and best underwater visibility, making it the preferred window for water sports — even though it overlaps with the early hurricane season.
Rain. Showers can happen any time of year, but October and November see the most rainfall. Showers tend to pass quickly, rarely disrupting a full day.
