The main square is the heart of San Rafael, a leafy block of plane and palo borracho trees centred on a fountain and a bronze equestrian statue of San Martín. It is the gathering place in the evenings — families out for an ice cream, teenagers on the benches, vendors selling tortas fritas.
The cathedral, Catedral San Rafael Arcángel, sits on the eastern side, an unremarkable twentieth-century church that is more interesting as a town landmark than as architecture. The municipal museum is a short walk away. The bars and ice cream parlours around the plaza are the standard way to end a wine-tour afternoon.
