Bodega El Esteco

Bodega El Esteco is one of the most visited wineries in Cafayate, both for its wines and its setting. The estate includes a colonial-style hotel and restaurant, extensive vineyards running up toward the mountains, and a well-organised tasting room. The Torrontés here is reliably excellent — dry, floral, and aromatic, with more complexity than its reputation sometimes suggests. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec from these high-altitude vineyards are also worth trying.

Winery tours are offered most days and include a walk through the vineyards and production areas as well as a tasting of four to six wines. The setting alone — low colonial buildings, vines, the mountains of the Calchaquí Valley above — justifies the visit. Bookings for tours are recommended in the busy season (March–May and September–November). The on-site restaurant serves Argentine food alongside the estate's wines and is open to non-guests.

A story
El Esteco's history in the Calchaquí Valley goes back to 1892, making it one of the oldest continuously operating wineries in northern Argentina. The family that founded it was instrumental in establishing Torrontés as a varietal worth taking seriously — for most of the 20th century it was considered a bulk wine grape, and El Esteco helped change that perception through careful vineyard management and international marketing. The original colonial-style bodega building survives alongside the modern production facilities.
