Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary (Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Rosario) stands on the main plaza of Cafayate, its terracotta-coloured baroque façade facing the shaded square. It is the most prominent building in town and a natural landmark for orientation. The interior is relatively simple — whitewashed walls, carved wooden altars, a few religious paintings — in the manner typical of Argentine provincial churches.

The cathedral is open most days, and the plaza in front of it is where local life happens: benches in the shade of leafy trees, children playing in the late afternoon, older residents walking in the evening. The combination of the cathedral, the surrounding historic buildings, and the view of the Calchaquí hills above the rooftops makes this one of the more attractive small-town squares in northwestern Argentina. The helado and empanada shops on the surrounding streets are excellent.

A story
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary has dominated Cafayate's main plaza since its construction in the 19th century, but it took nearly a century to complete — the towers were not finished until well into the 20th century. The building is the seat of the Diocese of Cafayate, an unusual status for such a small town, which reflects Cafayate's historical importance as a regional centre in the Calchaquí Valley.
