The Loma del Pliegue Tumbado is the highest viewpoint accessible from El Chaltén by trail, at around 2,000 metres. The hike is 20 km return with about 1,000 metres of elevation gain — more demanding than most of the park trails and less crowded for it. From the top, on a clear day, you can see both Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre simultaneously, plus a vast sweep of the Patagonian steppe to the east and the ice fields to the west.
The trail heads south from El Chaltén rather than north like the Fitz Roy trails, which means it is rarely overrun. Allow 7–9 hours and bring extra layers — the summit is fully exposed to the wind and temperatures can drop sharply even in summer. This is a trail for people who want solitude and panoramic scale rather than the close-up drama of the more famous routes.
