A small hill on the western edge of Esquel, crowned with a metal cross visible from town. The walk up is steep but short — 45 minutes from the centre of town if you take the direct trail, less from the upper end of Sarmiento street. The views are the reward: the whole Esquel basin, the surrounding hills, and on clear days the snow-capped peaks of the Andes to the west.
The trail is well-trodden but unmarked in places; ask at the tourist office in town for current conditions. Take water and a hat — the hillside is exposed. Sunset is the best time to be on top.
