Villa La Angostura

Patagonian lake town between Nahuel Huapi forest, copper-barked arrayanes, and Cerro Bayo.

Villa La Angostura sits on the north shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi, smaller and quieter than Bariloche but with the same Patagonian mix of cold blue water, forested mountains, and timber lodges. It is not a town of grand monuments. The reason to come is the landscape right on its doorstep.

The strongest day is the walk or bike ride into Los Arrayanes National Park, where the Quetrihue Peninsula narrows into a protected forest of cinnamon-coloured myrtle trees. In winter, Cerro Bayo gives the town its ski-resort life; outside the snow season it works as a viewpoint over the lake basin. Shorter outings lead to the Correntoso River, Lago Espejo, and small coves where the water is too cold for lingering but too clear to ignore.

Villa La Angostura is best as a slow Patagonian base, especially if Bariloche feels too busy. Give it one spare day and you can make a real trip of it: forest in the morning, lake views in the afternoon, and a town centre that still feels like a mountain village rather than a city suburb.

Activities

Villa La Angostura sits on the northern shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi, and the lake is the main event — kayaking in its sheltered bays is the best way to see the Arrayanes forest peninsula and the mountains around it.
