Samaipata is a village in the hills three hours from Santa Cruz, built around El Fuerte — a carved sandstone rock that is pre-Inca, Inca and Spanish in layers, and UNESCO-listed.
The other reason to be here is birds. The Amboró park boundary is close, and the cloud forest above the village is some of the most accessible birding in the country.
