Rio Sucuri — a snorkelling river experience similar to the Rio da Prata, set in beautiful Atlantic forest. The current carries you downstream through gin-clear water past piraputanga and other river fish; the forest overhangs the banks and the setting is particularly peaceful. Book through a local agency as with all Bonito attractions.
Pantanal day or overnight trip — the Pantanal, one of the world's great wetlands, lies to the north and west of Bonito. Day trips are possible from town but an overnight stay at a fazenda (ranch) allows for sunrise and sunset wildlife drives when jaguar, giant otter, capybara, giant anteater, and hyacinth macaw sightings are most likely. Many operators in Bonito can arrange this, or it can be done as a detour between Campo Grande and Bonito. The southern Pantanal around the Transpantaneira road is considered the best area for jaguar watching in the world.
Buraco das Araras — a giant natural sinkhole about 50 km south of Bonito, home to a large colony of red-and-green macaws (araras). Arriving at dawn or dusk when the birds return to roost is the most spectacular time to visit. A guided walk around the rim of the sinkhole takes about an hour. Easy to combine with other Bonito excursions.
Campo Grande — the state capital, 260 km to the northeast, makes a practical half-day or overnight excursion for anyone with a hire car and time to spare. The Mercado Municipal has good regional food stalls serving sobá and other Mato Grosso do Sul specialities, and the city has better infrastructure than Bonito for stocking up or sorting logistics.
