The main gateway to Chapada Diamantina is Lençóis, which has a small airport (LEC) with regular flights from Salvador and other Brazilian cities operated by regional carriers. The flight from Salvador takes about 45 minutes. Flying is the most convenient option.
By bus from Salvador, the journey to Lençóis takes 6-7 hours on the BR-324 and BA-850 highways. Several bus companies operate the route, with departures throughout the day. Salvador has a major international airport with direct flights from several European cities and connections from throughout Brazil; it is the main arrival point for international visitors.
Salvador is also worth visiting in its own right — a city of spectacular baroque churches, a vibrant Afro-Brazilian culture, and excellent food. Combining a few days in Salvador with a visit to Chapada Diamantina makes for a rounded Bahia itinerary.
