Pico do Barbado

Pico do Barbado, at 2,033 metres, is the highest point in Bahia state and one of the higher summits in northeastern Brazil. The mountain sits in the southern section of Chapada Diamantina, near the town of Mucugê, and the ascent is a two-to-three-day trek through diverse ecosystems: starting in caatinga at the base, climbing through cerrado and campo rupestre (rocky montane grassland), and finishing on the high-altitude quartzite plateau.

The campo rupestre landscape near the summit is particularly extraordinary — a botanical zone of remarkable endemism, with hundreds of species of orchids, bromeliads, and unusual succulents adapted to the thin soils and temperature extremes of high altitude. The summit views on clear days extend from the coast to the west of the Bahian highlands. The trek requires a local guide, camping equipment, and reasonable fitness; it is not technically difficult but the remoteness and altitude demand preparation.
