Mucugê

Mucugê is the other major gateway town into Chapada Diamantina National Park, situated at the southern end of the park and serving as the base for the Pico do Barbado trek and the southern trails. Like Lençóis, it is a preserved 19th-century diamond-mining town, though smaller and quieter — most travellers who come to the park base themselves in Lençóis and visit the southern sections on day trips, but Mucugê rewards a stay for those willing to go deeper.

The town has an unusual baroque cemetery — the Cemitério Bizarra (Strange Cemetery), where the marble and stone monuments are stacked in elaborate tier formations that look more like an architectural model than a working graveyard — and a decent infrastructure of pousadas and restaurants. The semiarid countryside around Mucugê is known for the sempre-viva (everlasting flowers, dried wildflowers that keep their colour indefinitely), which local communities harvest as a sustainable source of income.
