Cumbuco

Fishing village north of Fortaleza, known for kitesurfing, sand dunes, and Lagoa de Cauipe.

Cumbuco is a small fishing village 25 kilometres north of Fortaleza, and one of the best kitesurfing destinations in Brazil. The setting is dramatic: a long sandy beach with blue sea on one side and towering sand dunes on the other, with palm trees, a small town square, and a football pitch in between.

The wind blows reliably year-round, making Cumbuco a magnet for kitesurfers. The best months are August to December, when 10–14m kites handle the conditions well. Six kilometres downwind, the Lagoa de Cauipe is a flat freshwater lagoon reached by a 45-minute downwinder — also a good family destination for calm swimming. For wave riding, Paracuru is an hour north — best for intermediate and advanced kiters.

Beyond kitesurfing, dune buggy tours over the coastal dunes are the other classic activity. The dunes here are high enough to be genuinely exciting, and the drivers know how to use them. The village itself is tiny — about 1,500 residents — and nightlife is limited to cold beers on the town square. For anything more, head to Fortaleza, where the clubs and live music venues run every night of the week. The water temperature is 22–25°C year-round.

Things to Do

Cumbuco's activities are almost entirely beach and wind-based. Kitesurfing is the main draw, but buggy tours, sand boarding on the dunes, and trips to the freshwater lagoons round out a few days here. The village is genuinely small — come for the outdoors and the beach, not the culture.

When to Go

Cumbuco is close to the equator and has two distinct seasons. The dry season runs roughly from July to January — this is when the trade winds are strongest and most reliable, the skies are clear, and the beach is at its most inviting. August to November is the peak kitesurfing season, when conditions are consistently excellent. The wet season runs from February to June, with heavy rain especially in March and April; the wind drops and kitesurfing becomes less reliable, though still possible on good days.

Year-round water temperature is 22–25°C. The village can be busy with Brazilian holidaymakers during school holidays, particularly in July and at Carnival. Outside of those periods it is quiet enough that you will have the beach largely to yourself.
