Porto de Galinhas is a beach village south of Recife, famous for the reef pools that appear at low tide just off the sand. It is busy and very much on Brazil's holiday map, but it clears the bar because the sea is genuinely the point here: warm water, natural pools, rafts on the reef, and a run of nearby beaches with different moods.
The classic Porto morning is a jangada ride to the natural pools, timed carefully around low tide. After that, the day can be as lazy or active as you want. Stay near the village beach for restaurants and easy swimming, head to Muro Alto for calmer water behind the reef, or go south to Maracaipe for surf and a rougher beach-town feel.
This is not a place to look for grand history. It is a place to plan around tide tables, eat seafood and tapioca, and spend more time in the water than on the road. Recife is close enough for arrival, but Porto de Galinhas works best if you sleep here and let the tides set the pace.
