Araçagi is one of the quieter beaches on the island of São Luís, further from the city centre than Calhau and correspondingly less crowded. The beach is long and relatively undeveloped — a few simple bars rather than a strip of kiosks — and the sea here is calmer than at some of the more exposed beaches.
Getting there takes about 45 minutes by taxi from the historic centre. It's the beach to head to when you want to swim in the sea rather than sit in a crowded beach bar. The water is generally cleaner than at the more central beaches, and the lack of crowds means you can actually hear the waves.
