Chapel of Laranjeiras

The Chapel of São José das Laranjeiras, commonly called the Chapel of Laranjeiras, is a small colonial-era church in the historic centre, notable for its well-preserved facade and the quiet courtyard that surrounds it. Unlike the grander churches of the old town, this one retains an intimate, neighbourhood character — it feels like it belongs to the people who live nearby rather than to the city at large.

The chapel dates from the colonial period and has been restored with care. The surrounding streets are among the quieter ones in Praia Grande, and visiting the chapel is a good excuse to explore that part of the neighbourhood, where the azulejo facades are dense and the streets narrow enough that you can touch both sides at once.
