Theatro da Paz

A grand neoclassical opera house built during the rubber boom, with a chandelier that once burned whale oil.

Guided tours run on weekdays and let you into the main hall, the backstage, and the smaller rehearsal spaces. The guides are knowledgeable and the tour takes about an hour. Check the schedule if you want to catch an actual performance — tickets are often surprisingly affordable.

The theater sits on Praça da República, a broad square shaded by mango trees where Belenenses come to sit in the late afternoon when the heat finally eases. It is one of the more pleasant places in the city to do nothing in particular.

A story
Built in 1874 at the height of the Amazon rubber boom, the Theatro da Paz was Belém's way of telling the world it was a serious city. Rubber barons funded a full Italian neoclassical theater — marble floors, frescoed ceilings, and a chandelier that originally burned whale oil. The building faces the shaded Praça da República and is still in active use for opera, ballet, and concerts.
