Belém rewards slow exploration. Most of the major sights are concentrated in Cidade Velha, the colonial waterfront neighborhood where the city began in 1616, and can be covered on foot in a day. Further out, the botanical gardens and the São Brás market district give a sense of the broader city. The market at Ver-o-Peso alone is worth a morning; the Goeldi Museum is worth an afternoon.
