Mercado de São Brás

An 1911 iron market building now used as a cultural center and weekend fair venue.

The market sits in the São Brás neighborhood, about 2 km east of the waterfront. It is less visited than the Cidade Velha sights, which means you will likely have the building largely to yourself on weekdays.

The surrounding neighborhood has its own low-key appeal — a mix of traditional sobrado houses, old pharmacies, and local bars serving cold beer in the shade. The nearby São Brás church, with its unusual brick towers, is also worth a look.

A story
The São Brás Market was built in 1911 using the same prefabricated iron construction techniques that produced Ver-o-Peso's fish market. Unlike its more famous counterpart, São Brás fell out of commercial use and was repurposed as a cultural space. Today it hosts weekend craft fairs, live music, and a small permanent exhibition on the history of the neighborhood. The iron structure itself — high, airy, and painted dark green — is worth seeing.
