Lagoa Juparanã

Large freshwater lagoon west of Linhares, with public beaches and a Tupi name meaning freshwater sea.

Lagoa Juparanã is the easy natural escape from Linhares. The water body is large by Brazilian lagoon standards, with beaches such as Três Pontas, Caju, and Minotauro giving the city a weekend shore that is freshwater rather than ocean.

Do not expect a manicured resort lake. The appeal is simpler: warm water, boats, low wooded shores, and the feeling of a broad inland sea close to the highway. Go with local advice about current access points, because some beaches and shorelines sit beside private land.

A story
Juparanã means something close to 'freshwater sea' in Tupi, which is a fair description when you first see the wide water west of Linhares. Imperador Island in the lagoon carries a local memory of visits by Dom Pedro II in 1860 and Getúlio Vargas in 1954.
