Linhares

Espírito Santo city of lagoons, Atlantic Forest reserves, and turtle beaches north of Vitória.

Linhares is not a pretty colonial town and it does not pretend to be one. It is a working city on BR-101, about 135 km north of Vitória, with its best travel reasons spread across the surrounding municipality: freshwater lagoons, preserved Atlantic Forest, and a wild stretch of turtle coast.

The strongest anchor is Lagoa Juparanã, a broad freshwater lagoon west of town with public beaches and boatable water. North of the city, Reserva Natural Vale protects a large block of lowland Atlantic Forest with trails, birdlife, and environmental interpretation.

The coast is farther out but gives Linhares its more unusual edge. At Regência and the Comboios Biological Reserve, sea turtle conservation and surf beaches meet the mouth of the Doce River. Linhares works best for travelers already moving up the Espírito Santo coast who want nature rather than another city stop.

Guide

Getting There

Linhares sits on BR-101, the main highway along Brazil's eastern seaboard. Buses running between Vitória and northern Espírito Santo or southern Bahia stop in town, and the drive from Vitória usually takes around two hours when traffic is kind.

The useful places around Linhares are spread out. Lagoa Juparanã is close enough for a taxi or rideshare if you arrange the return; Reserva Natural Vale is on BR-101 north of town; Regência and Comboios need a car, local transport, or a guided arrangement.
