Petrópolis is essentially a museum of 19th-century imperial Brazil, concentrated in a compact historic centre that can be walked in a morning. The Imperial Museum is the obvious starting point, but the Crystal Palace, the cathedral, and a scattering of 19th-century houses and gardens fill out a full day. The surrounding mountains add hiking and waterfalls for those who want to stay longer.
