Terceira Ponte (Third Bridge)

The Terceira Ponte (Third Bridge) is the main road crossing linking Vila Velha and Vitória, stretching 3.3 kilometres over the Penha Channel at a height that allows large ocean-going vessels to pass underneath. The bridge is effectively the city's emblem — visible from the beaches, the convent hill, and practically everywhere in the metropolitan area.

You cross it in a bus or taxi in five minutes, but for a proper look, head to Praia da Costa or the Prainha waterfront in the evening, when the bridge is illuminated and the bay takes on a particular beauty. There is no pedestrian crossing — you see it from the water's edge or from the air.

A story
The bridge's official name is the Deputy Darcy Castelo de Mendonça Bridge, but nobody calls it that. When it opened in 1989, at 3.3 kilometres, it was the longest bridge in Brazil and is still the second tallest in the country, with a clearance of 50 metres above the water at its highest point.
