Cerro Botucaraí is the ridge that gives Candelária its backdrop. The climb is short but steep enough to feel earned, and the top opens onto the patchwork of fields, forest, and low hills that define this part of Rio Grande do Sul.
The hill also has a local religious life, with pilgrimages around major Christian holidays. Even outside those dates, it is the best place to understand the town as more than its centre.
