Candelária is a small city in Rio Grande do Sul with a stronger identity than its size suggests. It sits on the Paleorrota, the fossil-rich belt of southern Brazil where Triassic rocks have produced early dinosaur and mammal-line remains.
The town centre is quiet, but the local museum gives Candelária its real point. Fossils found in the area connect this rural municipality to the deep history of Pangaea, while German settlement shows up in the local architecture and memory.
Outside town the landscape opens into the Botucaraí hills, old bridges, waterfalls, and a long brick aqueduct. Candelária is not a polished tourist stop, but for travelers already moving through central Rio Grande do Sul it offers enough fossil history and countryside to justify the detour.
