Estrada Bonita

The Estrada Bonita is a rural road running about 30 kilometres north-west of Joinville through the old German colonial farmland and the foothills of the Serra do Mar. The drive — or, better, the cycle — passes wooden colonial houses, family farms still working much as they did a century ago, and a string of small artisan producers.

Stops along the route include the Caminho da Roça honey makers, the strawberry farms that open for picking from October to December, several lunch restaurants serving the regional speciality of marreco recheado (stuffed duck), and the Vila da Glória chapel. Allow a full day if you want to stop at more than a couple of producers.

A story
The Estrada Bonita is the surviving fragment of the original mid-19th-century colonisation road built by Joinville's German settlers, the Strada Dona Francisca that ran up the coast and into the interior. The road is still lined with wooden farmhouses, ornamented in the Pomeranian style, and several of them now sell honey, smoked sausage and home-made jam at the gate.
