The Zoobotânico is a combined zoo and botanical garden on the north side of the city, set in an area of preserved Atlantic Forest. The animal collection is modest by South American standards but does a good job with the regional fauna — capuchin monkeys, jaguars, ocelots, anteaters, and a particularly large macaw aviary.
The botanical side is the real attraction: thirty hectares of native forest with marked trails, a bromeliad collection, and a small lake. Entry is free and the place is busy with local families at weekends.
