Opinião

Porto Alegre's most storied live music venue, in the heart of Cidade Baixa

Opinião is Porto Alegre's most historically significant music venue and still one of its best. The club has been operating in Cidade Baixa since 1971, and its programme over the decades reads like a history of Brazilian popular music: MPB giants, rock bands, samba stars, and gaúcho folk musicians have all played here at various points in their careers. The venue has a medium-sized main room with good acoustics and a stage that is large enough for a proper band but small enough that you are never far from the music.

The current programming mixes local and regional acts with national touring artists. You will find anything from traditional gaúcho music and MPB to forró, rock, and jazz depending on the night. Tickets are inexpensive by any standard. The bar is good — decent caipirinhas, cold chopp, and the general atmosphere of a place that knows what it is and does not try to be anything else. Cidade Baixa on a Friday or Saturday night is lively in all directions; Opinião is the cultural anchor. Check the website or social media for the current week's programme before you go.

A story
Opinião opened in 1971, during the military dictatorship, and became immediately important: it was one of the few spaces in Porto Alegre where musicians could perform work that was politically uncomfortable, partly because the venue's owner had good connections and partly because the military's cultural censors in Rio Grande do Sul were not always paying close attention. Several musicians who later became nationally famous played their first significant shows here.
