Casa Bolognesi

1840s wooden house where the Peruvian commander spent his last hours

The two-storey wooden house just east of Plaza Colon was the headquarters and last residence of Colonel Francisco Bolognesi, the Peruvian commander killed on the Morro in 1880. It survived the war intact and the structure inside is largely original — a rare survivor of pre-1880 Arica.

The Casa now houses the Peruvian consulate and a small free museum on the ground floor with a few period rooms, military artefacts and Bolognesi's desk. It is more atmospheric than informative; allow twenty minutes. The clapboard-and-pine construction is a reminder that this part of the coast traded heavily with Pacific North America in the 19th century.
