Copiapó has a modest but functional café scene centred around the streets near Plaza Prat. The city's mining-shift culture means there is demand for coffee and snacks at all hours, and the central cafés fill up between shifts. Evenings bring out a livelier bar scene, particularly at the weekend, with the younger population from the Universidad de Atacama mixing with mine workers on days off.
